Blue Acoustics were recently appointed to carry out noise at work assessments at three sites belonging to FGP group in Yeovil and Weymouth.
FGP manufacture precision metal components for the aerospace industry using a variety of automated and hand operated machines. Whilst the sites were not particularly noisy as a whole, there was concern that individual machinists may be exposed to excessive noise levels and so Blue Acoustics were called in to carry out a noise at work survey to identify any potential noise risks. Dose badges were deployed where required and spot measurements taken in all areas to provide a more general picture of the factory noise levels.
“We generally assign dose badges to staff members who are not fixed to the same place all day. This allows noise exposure (or LEP,d) levels to be accurately established through time averaging over an entire shift. The FGP machinists were found to be exposed to varying levels of noise and this was largely due to the type of the machinery they use. Each machinist is generally associated with one machine but the machines are large, complex and very precise. As such, they demand skilled operatives to set, operate and maintain them and this means that the machinists are not fixed to any one position. Whilst noise levels may be excessive when standing next to the cutting head, any other position around the machines are relatively quiet. So it’s clear to see why it’s very difficult to attain accurate data with spot measurements in this situation.
We’re finding that the use of dose badges is being increasingly demanded by insurance companies to provide an accurate view of noise exposure levels at the ear. This accuracy serves to strengthen the case for NAW2005 compliance.”
