We are very proud of the work we carried out for the Met Office down in Exeter. Their ‘Collaboration Building’ provides creative space for developers utilising their world leading weather modelling computer system.
The intention was to provide conference / meeting facilities on the mezzanine level which generated privacy concerns with respect to sound transfer between this and the development area below.
Through close liaison with the client we were able to define the following following brief :
- To provide ideal meeting/conference communication conditions on the mezzanine floor
- To ensure a significant level of privacy so that subject matter is not readily distinguishable at ground floor level
- To reduce, where possible, sound transmission between the floors
A series of sound transmission and reverberation tests were carried out to determine the sound propagation characteristics between the spaces.
Mitigation design was anything but straight forward. The building had been designed with air flow in mind and floor to ceiling screening was not possible.
However, through extensive analysis and a lot of coffee we were able to recommended a bespoke, directive sound system in the mezzanine area, absorptive acoustic screening around the perimeter and a sound masking system installed on the ground floor. The combination of these would significantly reduce inter-area sound transmission, whilst creating an ideal conference / meeting environment with maximum speech intelligibility and privacy.
