Blue Acoustics were given the task of quantifying the noise impact of a new bus depot at the surrounding dwellings in Tipton in the West Midlands. The client operates a large number of bus services across the area and wished to utilise an alternative site to store and wash its fleet.
Bus depot noise is driven by vehicle noise which varies significantly in level and frequency content according to the type and size of the bus and their associated engine size and type.
The complexity of this job became apparent when the client explained that they used buses from several different manufacturers which came in three different sizes. This necessitate extensive measurement which was carried out at night to minimise the influence of residual noise from the busy road which ran along the boundary of the existing depot. To minimise error, the busses were measured in-situ at the proposed depot location. Drivers were instructed to drive at various speeds and measurements taken at distance for each type.
4 sound meters were installed near to the surrounding receptors to measure background noise levels over a 24hr period. Bus noise data was then used to predict noise levels at the receptors based on time tables provided. This became a very complex undertaking as different bus types were used for different bus routes which left or arrived the site in different directions, and bus movement frequencies changed with time, generating different noise signatures at the extremities of the working day.
The report concluded that some night time movements generated excessive assessment levels and a barrier path was designed around the site to attenuate engine noise accordingly. Detailed reporting was provided with all calculations and assumptions.
