Blue Acoustics recently carried out a plant noise assessment for the conversion of retail to office space in Padstow, Cornwall. The offices are situated in a stunning location by the estuary, with views over the famous harbour.
This Padstow noise survey required a BS4142 style noise assessment to determine the noise impact of a number of air handling units at the residences above. Cornwalls ‘Development Sound Standard’ document was consulted and the criteria identified to satisfy the local authorities own noise standards.
We were more than happy to attend this site as the surroundings are stunning. We arrived on site early one summer morning to take a background noise measurement during the most noise sensitive period of the day. This period was from 07:00 when the offices opened and the air conditioning system was turned on. It was also the quietest period of the day during office hours as the hoards of tourists had not yet arrived for the day.
To minimise disruption to the occupants we used one of our heavy duty mic stands to position the meter 4m up and 1m from the nearest residential window. The positioning of the site was at the end of a harbour access road and relatively sheltered. LA90 levels were driven by boat noise and activities from the nearby ferry terminal.
Initial measurement found the assessment level to be excessive and so mitigation was designed in the form of a simple wooden shelf / roof system above the units. The shelf was designed using INSUL sound insulation design software, to utilise off the shelf construction materials. The end choice was simply a piece of 18mm plywood board with a felt covering. We stipulated the dimensions and issued the report.
The site was re-visited at night to measure the resultant noise levels during low residual noise levels and a final report issued to satisfy the local planning department.
